Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.17-10-386

The Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Beta release will not boot when installed on my system. Dapper works fine. When booting without 'quiet' and 'splash' in the grub kernel options I get output about modprobe failing, and it just sits.

I had to install Edgy by installing Dapper and then dist-upgrading. The Live/Install CD eventually boots (after sitting for 10 minutes doing nothing) but it cannot find my SATA hard drive to install to, the mouse doesn't show up, and there are several other problems, hence I have a feeling it may have something to do with the SATA drivers, but I'm not sure.

I am able to boot using my Dapper 2.6.15 kernel for now. Output from below is using the working kernel.

This seems like a pretty critical bug; I hope someone can take a look at this before the release in a few days.

The promise driver incorrectly reports three SATA ports on cards with two SATA, one PATA port. After, when tries to initialise the third - in fact the PATA port as SATA - it fails, and causes kernel oops. Furthermore the additional PATA port in SATA controllers is currently supported only in develpoment branch of the kernel (http://linux-ata.org/driver-status.html).

(See http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/6/8/254 for a similar bug.)

I made a trivial patch to remedy it by simply disabling the PATA port which did not work anyway.

Is the same issue present in the latest package in Edgy release? If not, then this bug should probably be closed.

Thanks for responding! Please let me know if the patch works. It would also be useful to see if this issue has been patched in a later version of the kernel. Are you running the latest kernel?

Confirmed on the most current Edgy kernel and also on yesterday's Feisty daily live cd. This bug NEEDS to get fixed. I can't use any recent kernels or live cds because of it and the bug has been open for a long time now. This should probably also be sent upstream to the kernel folks.

It's been a long time since I've patched my kernel for anything, so if anyone wants to walk me through the process I will confirm the patch. Just don't let this bug stagnate any longer please!

Hi Daniel,

Thanks very much for checking this bug with the latest Edgy LiveCD. I need the following information from you, collected using the latest Edgy LiveCD:

1. Architecture of the machine (please confirm that it's a 32-bit Intel machine). Providing the output of "uname -a" would be perfect.
2. Please run "dmesg > dmesg.log" and attach the file "dmesg.log" to this bug.
3. Please run "lspci -vv > lspci-vv.log" and attach the file "lspci-vv.log" to this bug.
4. Please run "lspci -vvn > lspci-vvn.log" and attach the file "lspci-vvn.log" to this bug.

Note that the above are the requirements of the Ubuntu kernel team (see here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelProblems). As soon as you provide this information, I'll refer the issue to the Ubuntu Kernel Team, storage group (https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-kernel-storage).

Thanks again for your contribution to Ubuntu!

Just a quick note: I realize that you already posted some of this information (like dmesg output among other things), however, it would be more helpful if you could repost it, from the same, latest kernel image on Edgy release. Thanks a lot, Daniel!

Hey,

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond, but I finally found some time today to get this done. It literally takes half an hour for me to boot from the live cd (it just sits after the kernel null pointer crashes modprobe or something, but eventually boots). When it finally boots I have no access to usb or network hardware, but I found a way to save the logs so I could bring them up again later on a second hard drive.

The logs attached are for Edgy, but booting a Feisty live cd has the same error (I just don't have the time to wait for it to boot all the way right now).

I just want to stress that this is a serious show stopper bug. I cannot use Ubuntu on my system with the default kernel. I'm really hoping the fix will get into Feisty.

Thank you so much for responding and providing the requested information, Daniel. Your help and cooperation is much appreciated! I am now assigning the bug to the Ubuntu Linux kernel developers for further analysis.

Note to kernel team: Prior comments on this bug include a kernel call trace, as well as a proposed patch for the sata_promise.c driver which seems to work around the problem according to the patch submitter.
