Bug Description

Forgive me if this is the wrong package to file this against.

As I posted here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Kubuntu-Edgy-Ideas-Feedback

I have an important concern about the KDM login screen in Edgy. The menu icon (to the left of the username and password fields) is very...cryptic? It is completely unobvious what it does, or that it's even something a user should click on. I'm not a newbie, so I naturally clicked it, figuring it was the menu; but a new Kubuntu or Linux user might not ever realize it's clickable, and might think that they have to log in before they can do something like reboot the computer or shut it down. I think that it should at least be labeled "Menu", or maybe "System Menu", probably with a down arrow next to it to indicate that it's a drop-down menu. (Really, I'm all for KDE and KDM, but I do like the way the GDM theme has always had the simple bar at the bottom with the date, time and shut down/reboot options. Is there some way that could be done in KDM? Can KDM themes do that?)

Thanks for your suggestions to improve Kubuntu. However, this is not a real bug. You can give your suggestions, opening a new feature request in Launchpad (https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/) for the development version. I suggest you to join Ubuntu Artwork Team (http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork) and discuss your idea, before making a feature request.

No offense, but this kind of response is frustrating and off-putting. To spend several minutes filing a bug about an important usability problem and then be told _ten months_ later to join the artwork team (!) and open a new "feature request" (which is just another type of bug report) is almost rude, even if worded politely.

This bug is quite real; it's not a feature request, it's a serious usability problem for new users. For it to be dismissed so lightly in such a bureaucratic "file-it-in-this-other-place" manner does not encourage further contribution in any form.

Maini, this is not a feature request - it's too small for that.

However, i do believe this may be fixed in gutsy, with the new theme. Will have to check

Adam, if you want more attention spent on bugs, I'd suggest you help out with some bug triaging. http://wiki.ubuntu.com/BugSquad for more info. All but one kubuntu developer is a volunteer, so any extra help is good.

sorry, not a spec-required feature request. it's still a feature request though.

This problem still exists in Hardy. There is no visual clue that the menu button is a clickable button at all, much less an important menu.

I recommend a simple "Menu" with a downward-facing arrow next to it.

I believe Intrepid's kdm theme solves this quite nicely.
For lack of a better screenshot, this: http://www.kde-look.org/content/preview.php?preview=1&id=90031&file1=90031-1.jpg&file2=&file3=&name=Oxygen+Reloaded
is what it basically looks like, except with a black version of the wallpaper and a more transparent widget theme.

Anyway, the menu button is placed on the bottom bar with a nice icon next to it. It changes colors when you hover over it.
