Bug Description

Upgraded an Acer Travel Mate 6592 G from 10.04 LTS to 10.10 Beta.

Description:
When rebooting after upgrade, the splash screen freezes. The hard disk keeps working for a few more seconds. I can still reboot the computer by pressing CTRL + ALT + DEL, but the same thing happens after each reeboot. I can not go into fail safe X mode, but fail safe root terminal works. And I can log on from another computer by SSH. To me, it seems like the X-server is frozen.

Expected behaviour:
The computer should continue booting into X.

The computer is using an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2400 XT grapics card.

Thanks for your bug report and for your contribution to ubuntu. In order to determine if this issue is usplash related, please boot your computer with usplash disabled and then shutdown to see if you can reproduce the issue? To disable usplash for a single boot, follow these steps:

1. Press Esc during Grub boot delay to access the boot menu.
2. Select your actual Ubuntu boot line and press "e" to edit it.
3. Select the "linux" line and at the end of the line, remove "splash" and "quiet".
5. Type "ctrl + x" to boot the custom boot line.

Hi Kurt!

I started the computer without the usplash according to your instructions. It's still freezing during boot... for a while that is. While I was attaching it to the wired network and logging in through ssh from another computer it all of a sudden unlocked and I was prompted with a standard headless (no gui/X) log in view.

The timeout could have been about a minute or so. And the output on the screen looks something like:

Sep 8 20:41:42 tm6592 kernel: [ 3.429628] uvesafb: mode switch failed (eax=0x34f, err=0). Trying again with default timings.

+ a few more lines similar to the last one that I couldn't find in any log file, followed by the standard text mode log in prompt.

I entered my username and password and after that I entered "startx". When doing so, it says:

I've been looking more into this and this is what I've done.

1) I uninstalled the fglrx package through "apt-get purge fglrx" ant tried to start in low graphics mode. Still no progress.

2) I reinstalled the fglrx package through apt-get and noticed that it failed to install "fglrx" and "fglrx-amdcccle".

3) I did a recovery boot and then a dpkg repair. The computer did a massive upgrade. I noticed that it upgraded some "xserver-xorg-video-ati" and "xserver-xorg-video-radeon" packages among others. It failed to install "fglrx" and "fglrx-amdcccle" again.

Hi,
I have got the same problem as Jacob. I am also using a Acer Travel Mate 6592G running Ubuntu 10.04. I have loaded updates earlier this week and since have the exact same problem getting the tpm_transmit tpm_send: error 4294967234.
My laptop starts up then gives me a black screen with a login prompt. When I leave it for about 3-5 minutes it continues to flash another error code and then only starts the normal X window. After that I can sign in and work normally.
Is there any resolution to this problem?

Gustav

Hi,

I got the same problem with Lucid Lynx. An upgrade to 10.10 did not help.
At the moment is isn't nice waiting about 5 minutes for a reboot.
Does anybody have a hint?

Dear Ubuntu-developers, up to the update 10.04 it works great, why do you
change it to this OS with this bug???

Moreover, due to a update of 10.04 (I don't know which) this problem appears, not because of the upgrade to 10.10

I also have a TravelMate 6592G and a recent Ubuntu 10.4 update cause this issue. Upon boot, I get the Ubuntu splash screen briefly, then it goes to the console based login prompt. After a few minutes, X server finally kicks in and displays the graphical login prompt. Everything is normal after that. I am running 64 bit Ubuntu 10.04.

Here's a workaround that worked for me:

Add
blacklist tpm_tis
to the file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Hi Kurt,

I just upgraded to Natty Alpha 2 using "update-manager -d".

When rebooting after the install/upgrade, the grub menu flickering some and its freezing somewhere half through the boot process. I can boot into a failsafe X session though and that's what I'm using right now.

However it's getting late (work tomorrow) so I don't have time to dig in to this more right now. But tell me if you want me to upload any log file and I'll be happy to do that as soon as possible! :)

Cheers

I did try a little more today.

1) Normal boot
Computer is freezing. The output on the screen says "Starting CUPS printing spooler/server".

2) Failsafe X (low graphics) boot
Some tpm_tis error messages are flashing by. Boots fine after that.

3) Normal boot with tpm_tis blacklisted
Computer is freezing. The output on the screen says "Stopping System V initialisation compatibility!.

Adding my kern.log
