After investigation, failure apparently caused by the presence of a (OK in Lucid but now faulty ?) script /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/iscan belonging to non-Ubuntu Epson-Seiko "iscan" image scanning package.

Hello, I had this problem and removing iscan was solved, thanks. But now, when I start my ubuntu it starts in tty1, no way to start graphic mode.

/usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/iscan troubles got cleared for the Maverick release.
