3) What I expected to happen is their are no problems with the kernel. ;)

4) What happened instead is their was a kernel issue that locked up my computer, had to restart to recover.

Updated the kernel, tried:

lshw | grep radeon

which ran successfully with no kernel crashes. However, when I ran the same under sudo:

sudo lshw | grep radeon

had a kernel crash, then it locked up my OS requiring a hard reset.
