Bug Description

I'm trying to use a cups network printer over ipp which requires authentication. I can easily add the printer (System Settings - Printer Configuration - New Printer) but as soon as I want to print something the print job get hold. The printer applet lists the job with "held for authentication". But no user/pass input form opening or available.

Workaround: stop cups, edit printers.conf, hardcode user+pass in the printer-uri and start cups again...

affects: ubuntu → cups (Ubuntu)
affects: cups (Ubuntu) → system-config-printer (Ubuntu)

Looks like an upstream problem of the system-config-printer applet. The user/password pop-up dialog for job authentication does not appear. Tim, can you have a look into this?

Till, can you reproduce it? I've never seen this happen.

Tim, no, I did not observe that. Can you perhaps ask the user for more info?

And it is an issue with various print servers out there requiring user/password, because printing is prohibited until the user authenticates at the printer – mostly because it is thought as good practice not to have confidential print jobs laying around because these where never fetched by the user printing them ….
