The acpi package is a small application that provides information about battery status. Crashes should be assigned to the kernel.

Andrew, what does the kernel panic look like?

it says "Kernel Panic - not syncing, fatal exception in interrupt"

if you need more information i reproduce and write down everything that
shows up on my screen.

If you could, that would be great.

As I seen to have the same problem (Samsung X60), I attach a screen shot of the panic. BTW, it worked o.k. in 2.6.17-8 and fails from 2.6.17-9 (including today's -10)...

I can't get a screenshot of the kernel panic anymore... I changed
something, and now my screen just goes blank, it doesn't show the panic
anymore.

See bug 62196, has the same panic, got an e1000 chip ethernet in there?

Hmmm. A few remarks When I "modprobe -r e1000" in a console, the kernel panics immediately (well, after half a second or so). But with a different trace back.

It seems to suspend o.k., when I do not load the fglrx kernel module. Regardless if using the Ubuntu one or the self compiled 8.29.6 from ATI it will reliably crash with the posted panic as soon as it is inserted. I cannot remove this module while X is running, even in background ("is in use"). There seem to be a few posts about this around in the net regarding - mostly - Thinkpads. Either fast video OR suspend.

I've got an R50 with mobility radeon 9000. I can suspend without panic and resume fine.

Try editing /etc/default/acpi-support
And add to MODULES_WHITELIST e1000
and see if it works. That's all mine ultimately needed to workaround the panic I was getting, and I sleep and resume without problems every time now, even though I'm using fglrx:
$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: MOBILITY/RADEON 9000 DDR Generic
OpenGL version string: 1.3.1091 (X4.3.0-8.28.8)

The 18 month support period for Edgy Eft 6.10 has reached it's end of life. As a result, we are closing the linux-source-2.6.17 Edgy Eft kernel task.

Hardy Heron 8.04 was recently released. It would be helpful if you could test the new release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download . You should be able to test your bug using the LiveCD. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Unfortunately this bug report is being closed because we received no response to the last inquiry for information. However, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release was most recently announced - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta . If you are able to confirm this is still an issue with this most recent release please feel free to reopen this report. To reopen the bug report you can click on the current status, under the Status column, and change the Status back to "New". Thanks.
