Hitting send at login seems to restart X

Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

Boot machine.
gdm login screen appears.

Scenario one:
Type nothing
Hit send -> screen goes black, which looks like an X restart.
gdm login screen reappears.
Login as expected.

Scenario two:
Type user name
Hit send -> screen goes black, which looks like an X restart.
gdm login screen reappears.
Login as expected.

Scenario three:
Type user name
Click login button
Type password
Click proceed button
Gnome loads
Open console (via shortcut)
Type any letter and X restarts landing back at the gdm login screen.

I'm sure there are other scenarios.

this also happens to me on 10.10 but there is something i've noticed. on gdm, it doesn't show me and i don't have the ability to change sessions. it's disabled on the bottom panel.
