cheese records at very slow fps

Cheese displays streaming video from the webcam perfectly, until the user selects 'Start recording'.

After pressing 'Start recording' Cheese then only refreshes the screen once every ~10 seconds. The outputted .ogv file usually just shows the same still frame for the duration of time Cheese was recording.

Pressing 'Stop recording' has the effect of returning Cheese to its previous state of displaying streaming video at a decent, viewable refresh rate. The outputted video file is of the expected length (though, as said, it's only one recorded still image).
