I'm sorry "apt-xapian-index" was the option proposed by default. I can not assign error to any package, since I installed Ubuntu 10.10 I run into this problem.

The problem has gone away to install the proprietary fglrx graphics drivers from AMD / ATI

Ah, you fixed it with fglrx drvier but I experience the same behavior (as described in this bug's title) with nvidia card, although I am not sure if the underlying cause is the same.
