Had reported a bug (711599) which has been re-classified as a duplicate of this one. For information the following is supplied (note this was a crash of the application on its own and not the whole system):-

Running live CD 10.10 amd64 Ubuntu 10.10 - the Maverick Meerkat Downloaded 26 Jan 2011.
Checking partition sizes using Gparted and Diskutility (2.30.1) as there appears to be different information in both programs as to the sizes of created partitions on the same disk. (Do not know why information is not the same but do not believe that this problem relates to reported error - eg same partition is shown as 53GB [53,003,672,064 bytes] in Disk Utility and 49.36GiB in GParted)

Had checked partitions using Gparted and was then checking same partitions with Disk Utility when this application failed - had been using Check Filesystem option.
Error was repeatable when checking sixth partiton in sequence caused error to reoccur.
Partition checked on its own did not cause error.
Error seems to occur when a sixth partition is checked.
Alternating check with two partition also reproduces error on sixth check.
System had not been rebooted at time of re-test.
Partitions were EXT4 on a 320GB WD PATA disk Firmware 12.01B10
Not sure if this has a security implication or not.
Hope that this is of some use.
