Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:
 * Is this on a liveCD or installed?
 * If it is installed, is the drive you installed to a USB drive?
 * Were you able to continue after restarting, if this is not a liveCD?

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

This is the actual error from the log files:

Setting up udev (151-12.1) ...

Removing `local diversion of /sbin/udevadm to /sbin/udevadm.upgrade'

Hi Martin,

Sorry, I must have missed the first email somehow.

To answer the questions, this was a LiveUSB installation with a persistent
file storage (Casper). Restarting did not help the situation.

A couple of weeks after the problem first presented itself, I looked into
LaunchPad to see if anybody had a workaround for my issue. I resolved the
problem by going to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/casper/+bug/557023 and following
the workaround from Gary M. I copied /cdrom/casper/vmlinuz to
/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-21-generic, which allowed the update to proceed without
issue.

I should have mentioned the workaround when I found it, but I had forgotten
about my bug report. Sorry!

Thank you for all your hard work on Ubuntu.
