Is this Edgy or Dapper?

Could you give us more details? How are you installing the applications - Synaptic?

Could you give us an example of an application that is broken like this?

Distro, Ubuntu Edgy Knot3 + updates.
I run from console, "gnome-app-install".
Example:
- Select any application
- Click Apply, the system says what's gnonna be installed.
- Click Ok and the system install it.
- When the installation finish the "gnome-app-install" is still open.
- Click on Ok, and the system asks again that is gonna install the same application that's already installed. So it can't install again, but it ask you to do so. (endless loop)
- Click on close(by the X or by the cancell button) the "gnome-app-install" says that the changes aren't applied, what to do? discard the changes, but they are already installed.

I cannot reproduce this behavior. Which application do you want to install?

Thanks for your bugreport.

I can't reproduce this bug here. Do you see a install window after clicking apply and ok? Do you see a window telling you that the changes have been applied successfully?

thanks,
 Michael

There isn't a single application, actually I tried with 3 different computers/installations and applications. Ubuntu knot3 + updates, Ubuntu knot1 + updates and Xubuntu knot3 + updates with the same behavior.
On the first machine I installed "Quod Libet" and "Meld diff viewer", on the second "BOINC Manager" and on the third "Celestia".

Is there another synaptic already runing somewhere? Can you open a termianl and start:
$ gnome-app-install
in it and tell me what output you see when you click "Apply"? Does it print something like: "Another synaptic is running. Trying to bring it to the foreground" (or do you have that in your .xsession-errors file)?

I uploaded a new version of synaptic (the backend of gnome-app-install) that gives a proper error message when it can't acquire the apt lock. I will close the bugreport now, please reopen if the new synaptic does not fix the problem for you.

Thanks,
 Michael
