Bug Description

Binary package hint: indicator-applet

When I log out from my account, log into new account it works fine. I then try to switch back to my original account through the stock Ubuntu indicator applet. The open account disappears, but before the password dialog appears the screen hangs on a full black screen. There is no mouse cursor and the only way I know of to get back is to do a force restart by holding down the power button.

I am using Intel Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07).

This is similar to bug Bug #546578 reported for nvidia card. I am not sure if it is a card issue.

Trying this again and it seems to behave a bit differently at times. Sometimes gives me a black screen with mouse but no keyboard input and sometimes password dialog, but no keyboard input. Noticed there was disc activity at this point, so I left it for a few minutes and it then came alive by itself.

We ran top in batch mode as we tried to reproduce behavior. Resultant file was 8.5Mb in size so we searched for X0rg and found CPU usage went up to above 20%. Full TOP output available if required.

Hi, Thanks for reporting this bug,

This doesn't sound too much like an indicator application bug, can you add the log out applet to your panel and try switching users with that? right click the gnome panel -> add to panel -> log out. you should be able to click it and get the option of switching users.

thanks,

OK. I am giving up for today to try and reproduce this with the 'log out' applet. It has given no error after an hour of intensive switching. I will use it from now and give feedback if the problem reproduces.

I forgot to mention that the original bug reported is intermittent.

I am noticing a difference between switching users from the 'log out' applet and the 'Switch from....' function in the indicator applet:

'Switch from... ' first brings up a gui log in window (for about 1second in the old style without the user avatars) for the user that I am switching from before showing up the gui user selector with avatars. The 'log out' applet goes directly to the gui user selector with avatars.

Seems rather an xorg issue, could you add your Xorg.0.log and Xorg.0.log.old to the bug?

affects: indicator-applet (Ubuntu) → xorg-server (Ubuntu)

Not sure whether this is the same or not. I am running 11.10, 64 bit
user1 switches to user2 without logout
user2 sees strange results for cursor repainting
user2 logs out. user1 gives password. Black screen with small white rectangle at bottom right; 3 black, 4 white bars on left of this
No keys or cursor seem to function, so I use reset
This is not intermittent but has changed slightly in the way that the cursor works over the past month

Michael Jonker, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg-server REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Thank you for your understanding.
