Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

1. Update manager error message. Appeared after clean install of 9.10 while the Update Manager was reading packages:

E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

2. Pressed <OK>.

Update manager continued as normal.

Selected 312 Updates.

3. Restarted machine on prompt after update completed.

4. Ran Update Manager again.

5. The following error appeared after putting in password on prompt by the Update Manager:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

I am going to continue with the Update Manager process but fear there may be something seriously wrong with my installation.

I have done this installation many times before on this very machine and I cannot recall this error happening before.

Ran Update Manager again immediately following restart describde above. 246 packages selected. Pressed <Install Updates>

This error appeared:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

<Close>ed error. Tried to continue with installation of Updates. Same error occured again. Cannot continue.

Note: This is a brand new install of 9.10 from USB. Install procedure wiped hard drive. Did the following things after first boot:

I'm converting this to a question because this does not seem to be a bug.

Open a terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) and run "sudo dpkg --configure -a" without the quotes. You will need to enter your password when prompted.

Changed in update-manager (Ubuntu):
