LANG variable not being set correctly after language change

Bug Description

Binary package hint: language-selector

When setting the language in gnome-language-selector, the LANG variable is not set in the files /etc/default/locale and /etc/environment.

This is in contrast to the setting of the LANGUAGE variable, which is updated in both of the mentioned files.

It seems that the "Text" tab is used to set the LANG variable using the language selector tool. This is more of a usability bug than an actual bug, but it still makes on wonder why you have to set the language twice...

Issues within this problem area is being discussed at bug 553162, and I'm going to mark this report as a duplicate. The particular behavior you describe above is intentional, but as you can see at bug 553162 I'm arguing that there are other things that should be changed to make Ubuntu work as expected as regards language and locale settings.
