Bug Description
Encountered in Inkscape 0.47 -- I see 0.48 was released recently, need to test the new version to see if the behavior persists.
My environment:
- Inkscape 0.47
- Windows XP (SP3)
Steps to reproduce:
1 - Draw any convenient shape on the document.
2 - Use the Pen tool to draw an open path, with 2 nodes, that bisects the object.
3 - Select both objects and use Path > Division.
4 - Undo. Move the path away so it does not intersect the object, then select both objects and try Path > Division again.
Expected result:
- Step 3 should result in the bottom object being divided into separate objects, similar to Cut Path.
- Step 4 should not affect the object whatsoever (dividing path does not intersect).
Actual result:
- Step 3 causes both objects to be deleted.
- Step 4 works as expected.
Observations:
- This only affects Path > Division; Path > Cut Path still works fine.
- This only occurs if the divisor path is an open path with exactly two nodes that intersects the object.
- - If it is a closed path, everything works.
- - If it contains 3 or more nodes (for any reason, i.e. same or different subpaths), everything works.
- - If it does not intersect the bottom object whatsoever, everything works (bottom object unaffected).
Available workarounds:
- Close the path (if possible), or combine the top path with any convenient path that does not intersect the bottom object.

Still present in Inkscape 0.48 and 0.48+devel r9723.
