Confirmed that adding telepathy-logger via aptitude resolves this issue -- package dependency problem?

Hmm, current code only has telepathy-logger in recommends not depends. I wonder if it will need to be put depends to make sure it gets installed.

It seems indeed that if telepathy-logger is not installed, empathy will crash.

Confirmed - sudo apt-get install telepathy-logger - resolved the problem for me.
