3ware 9650SE issue - dpkg segfaults, hangs

I'm trying to use a brand newly installed system (at an ISP), which has a 3ware RAID card:

after a brand new Ubuntu 10.04 64bit install, I'm simply using dselect to install the packages I want - and running a number of rsync instances in the meantime, to transfer data. on two different occasions, this resulted in dpkg crashing, so much that in fact I couldn't even kill it with kill -9. this is what I got in syslog:

interestingly, when I killed the rsync processes, dpkg somehow got resurrected the second time.

this is all kind of disturbing, as it seems on a bit heavy disk I/O, the raid subsystem becomes unstable - what could be the issue here?

I got exactly the same problem, on Ubuntu 10.04.1 64bit :

Did you find any workaround by tweaking the parameters in the 3ware BIOS ?
Could it be caused by the 64 bit system ?

I am also having dpkg hanging up, this was also during a heavy disk I/O (mkfs on a 6TB partition) :

As the array crashes multiple times a month, this is very annoying. The server has some constant load, the file system partially under heavy load. RAID5 is equipped with 4x WD WD2002FYPS 2TB disks. I use the latest version of the 10.04 Ubuntu server release, also with the latest kernel release.
Happy to test whatever is available to remediate the situation.

i have the same issues with my 9650se on both ubuntu server 10.04 and 10.10 (both on their official latest kernel)
it freezes at all pc after few minutes.

it works good on ubuntu 9.04 with 2.6.28-11 kernel.

as soon as possible i will provide some addictional information (it's a production server and i cannot power off every times as i want)

Got the exact same problem in 10.04.1. With heave diskload, for instance rsync, the system goes down and needs a hard reboot.

When downgrading to a 9.10 kernel (2.6.28-19-server), everything works as expected again.

I filed the bug report as stated, but since some time the problem didn't appear anymore. However, I could not enter this in the apport-collect queries.
