Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

Steps to reproduce:

1. Lock the screen with CTRL+ALT+L to lock the screen
2. Move your mouse to show the prompt

What happens:

You're asked to provide credentials to unlock the screen. After you've done that, the screen switches to your desktop for a split second, then to the GDM prompt again. You have to log in for the second time.

thank you for your bug report, seems xorg or the session is crashing, could you add Xorg.0.log and Xorg.0.log.old to the bug

But if X.org or session was crashing, wouldn't all my running programs
be terminated?

right, so it seems you are just sent to the gdm login screen there?

Yes, the same login screen that you get when you lock your screen.

on screen locking you get gnome-screensaver to be used, do you have a background image to this screen like the login screen or is that just an unlock dialog on a blank screen?

The unlock dialog on a blank screen. Sorry I wasn't clearer.

I am having this exact same problem all day today.

When I lock my screen (or when it locks auto) I do the following:

Move my cursor, the login prompt appears.
I enter p/w, it displays my desktop for a split second and then brings me back to the login prompt again.
After entering p/w again it now lets me back in the desktop as per normal.
I am on Ubuntu 10.04.

Has there been a fix for this?
I notice the status is expired...

UPDATE:

If I move the cursor within 10 seconds of locking screen then I only need to login once.
But as soon as it goes beyond 10 seconds from when I locked I need to login twice...

I thought initially it may be to do with the screensaver as it only starts up 5 seconds after the screen goes black.
But I tried 2 seconds after the screensaver started (7 seconds after the lock) and I was able to get back to desktop with just the one login attempt.

But trying again at 10 seconds it resulting in me needing to login twice.
The problem is repeatable for me at 10 second period.

This is now affecting me. It just began to happen yesterday. I am running Maverick with the latest updates.

Same thing, log in, see my screen for less than a second, the screen goes black. I have to move the mouse or touch the keyboard to get the GDM password prompt.

For me a reboot seems to have cleared the problem.

After posting, I realized that I hadn't rebooted since the problem began. After rebooting, I can't trigger the problem any more. I'll repost if the problem reappears.
