Bug Description

Ubuntu freezes during heavy *wifi* network activity and/or when transfer rate gets high.
Gnome freezes, screen freezes, keyboard get unresponsive, network traffic is stopped, computer doesn't respond to ping, I can't ssh it, etc.
Only solution is a hard reset.

It happens for instance when:
- Download multiple files in Firefox
- Transferring files with other computers of my LAN
- backing up files over the network to a remote computer.

Low/moderate network activity works fine, for instance web browsing and keeping concurrent downloads to 1 or 2 at a time and as long transfer rate stay low my Ubuntu will never freeze.

If I switch to ethernet only, Ubuntu never freezes no matter what stress the network is put under.

When using Qsopcast watching P2P television my notebook freezes after some minutes.

I used the internal WIFI card as well as an external USB WLAN card. The behaviour is for both cards reproduceable.

At low network activity everything is fine. But when using Qsopcast, the notebook freezes after 10-20 minutes.

When instead of WLAN using a network cable and deactivate the WLAN function, the notebook does not freeze and everything works fine.

When notebook freeze, the LCD gets black and the caps lock panel blinks. According to description I found in some forum this refers to a kernel panick.

I use an IBM Thinkpad T43. Ubuntu 10.04. System is updated.

Consider this a "me too". I have a Lenovo R61, circa 2008. My symptoms are exactly as described by Xiao Ke, even including the capslock panel blinking.

See bug report #426130

As a workaround deinstalling gnome network manager and instead using wicd seems to work fine.

chrysoberyl, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please capture the oops following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies#Capturing_OOPs ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
