Bug Description
I just checked and there are only two packages left on my system (running KDE 4.5 from the PPA) which depend on hal: kdebase-runtime and kubuntu-desktop, where kdebase-runtime only Recommends it. KDE 4.5 isn't ready for a full HAL removal, but KDE 4.6 might. So looking forward for that release, maybe the dependency on the hal package in kubuntu-desktop could be lowered from Depends to Recommends with the next kubuntu-desktop update?
This request is similar to bug 550631, with the difference of not completely dropping the dependency.
I know I could also remove the kubuntu-destop metapackage once HAL isn't needed anymore but I was bitten by that once (upon a time) when I did a dist-upgrade and update-manager threw away half of my packages for some (probably backports related) reason.

Hmmm... bug 550631 is closed as Invalid for kubuntu-meta. Does the dup'ing of this bug essentially mean WONTFIX or "please reopen bug 550631"? :-)
