Bug Description

Optimizing an SVG can take several minutes in some cases (e.g. when a large amount of text has been converted to paths), but no progress indicator is displayed during this process. To the end user it appears as though nothing has happened; no file has been created, the document has not been saved. Only by watching CPU usage can you tell that something is going on until finally the process completes and the file appears. A non-modal progress window would help clarify that the save process is taking a long time and the user can continue to work on the document during this time.

If not, this report should be more generic. Other script based exports (such as Gimp XCF or XAML) take time to complete, even when the SVG file is relatively small.

I don't think I'd want to call it a duplicate without updating the description of Bug #171435 to include this case. The solution may be similar if not identical but the perceived problem is very different (long blocking operations look like the app has frozen vs long non-blocking operations appear to silently fail).

A progress bar for extensions would require a mechanism for extensions back to Inkscape (which currently does not exist and would likely be useless for most extensions).

Even if Inkscape supported it, Scour decided it will not implement a progress bar anytime soon [1] as most SVG files are processed within less than a second these days.
