Some explanations from me, I'll let Fabien decide what to do about it:

Both problems are due to the way Stellarium handles object names.

M40 is a star, so it's not in the nebula catalog, but Stellarium has some problems handling star name synonyms. It's possible that "M40" is not even in the list of synonyms.

I guess that the problem with the Pleiades is similar.

In both cases, you can at least slew to the object - just write the full name (e.g. "M45") and wait a second for the implicit on-line search in SIMBAD to return a result (it will be "Winnecke 4" for "M40"). The object will not be selected, but it will be centered when you press Enter.

Thank you, Bodgan.
It’s a pity if this "bug" wouldn't be correct.

In current implementation of catalogue for DSO we can't add M40 (M40 is not DSO - it's double star). I'm mark this bug as "fix committed" for M45 but we need make new catalogue of deep sky objects.
