WISH: HCL list easily generated

Bug Description

I wish that K/X/Ubuntu had an option to check functionality of current hardware, and then a button which sends a hardware list to the Ubuntu developers telling which hardware works and which does not.

Ubuntu could have a massive HCL within a few days of user-generated, anonymous reporting.

In Ubuntu, there is an Ubuntu Device Database tool in Applications->System.
Is this what you were looking for?
You might have to use the Alacarte menu editor to first make this menu item visible.

If this fulfils your wish, can we close this bug?

Thank you.

I am aware of that, but I'd like it in the other OSs (Kubuntu Xubuntu) as
well. Also, i read that your tool tells the User if things work, but not
necessarily that it tells Canonical what works and what does not. I'd think
it would be useful for the Devs and for others who want to research their
hardware before anything, such as a HCL is meant for. A single button to
send in the User's HCL into a database...

If this data is collected bt Canonical (by user choice) into an HCL, and the
tool is in easily available in the various sub-distros, then yes you can
close the bug.

Thank you!

also, the information sent by the Device Information Tool seems to go to this place: http://hwdb.ubuntu.com/ - which is obviously really broken (561980 submissions today? you have got to be kidding... and where are those 'links above' mentioned on the page?

The links all listed on http://hwdb.ubuntu.com/ seem to have the same submission information ('Couldnt detect laptop, assumed desktop' they all read), which also makes me think its broken.

But this page doesn't allow for searching for specific hardware either, although it may not be the point of that page but it is the point of the original bug/post/wish.

Thanks again.
