KDE's "System Settings: Display" is useless

Bug Description

My KDE System Settings doesn't allow me to change anything, even as Root user. I cannot change my resolution nor my colour depth, and trying to set up two displays is pointless. Anything that I do in here is marked as "Unable to confirm" or some other error, and the [Accept] button is always greyed out.

I have an NVidia 5200 with TV-Out (SVidio) (NVidia driver), a new Samsung LCD monitor, and an AMD Athlon 2900+ with 512MB RAM. This isn't an old machine. The Display settings should work, chould be configurable, and should be able to set up TwinView however I'd like it (top, left, clone, etc). Also, this should have a dialogue box to Accept the changes or wait 5 Seconds to revert (this would require X to restart or test somehow).

I was using KDE 3.5.2 and 3.5.3 on Kubuntu 6.06 LTS (Linux 2.6.15-27-k7) and
it wouldn't allow me to change anything. Just last night I updated to KDE
3.5.5 but it still doesn't do much of anything. I am now able to change the
resolution settings without errors about being untested, but I cannot click
Apply. Selecting "Second Screen" also does nothing to allow me to click
Apply.

Let me know if there is anything more that I can do for you!

I can confirm this on kubuntu edgy eft rc1 with kde.
Systemsettings version 0.2
The control module displays the data correctly, but it seems not possible to change anything.

Intel 915 graphics adapter
Asus W5F, see hal dump for details.

Even the kcontrol monitor module acts the same way. The apply button is disabled and is not activated when changing something.

Could you try Feisty and see if you still have this problem with the latest version of guidance?

On this Dell Optiplex GX260:
The changes ask if I want to keep or revert, but nothing actually changes in
my 1280x1024 desktop unless I move it all the way to the lowest (640x480)
(this is the result of both being done as the user OR done as root). I
don't have Feisty installed on other computers yet (including the one which
was used in the bug report).

p.s. the "Run as root" dialog in that section has a horribly ugly icon, not
sure if you can fix that part...

thanks, and let me know anything more I can do, please.

When testing this, all of my desktop disappeared. The files are still there
under /home/user/Desktop, but I don't *see* anything. I expect that
they'll be back after a logout or restart of X, but for some people this
could really freak them out. (I have nowallpaper soI don't know if this
would have been 'lost' also or not)

thanks again.

I have the same problem. I just (in the last 2 hours) downloaded and installed Kubuntu 7.04 beta from the ISO, loaded the nvidia-glx drivers from the 'add/remove programs' and then went to configure my 'graphics & display' in the 'system settings' area. I click 'administrator mode', enter my password, and then all the buttons along the bottom are disabled. I found a work around though. If you drag the resolution slider around, the ok and apply buttons will enable themselves and you can then make whatever changes you want. I haven't actually verified that the changes are actually made to the xorg.conf file yet though.

Additional info: AMD x2 4400+ 939 with Biostar nforce4 mb and nvidia 6800 AGP and the only update I've installed to the base install of Kubuntu so far is the nvidia video driver.

In addition, when I installed the nvidia binary drivers and then ran the command specified by the package description to enable the driver, it put a device line in my xorg.conf specifying an incorrect PCI bus location for my video card, which caused me to not be able to get back into X until I fixed it. There was no backup made (that I could find) of the old xorg.conf so if I didn't know how to use lspci and sudo and vi, this could have been a relatively major problem.

I seem to have the same problem on Kubuntu 8.04 with KDE4

Just installed it with Wubi and i can't change anything because apply stays greyed out. And also it does not correctly recognize my Monitor resolution. It should be 1280x1024 but it gives me only 1280x800 and 1280x768 and lower.

I hope there is some kind of solution for this.

Shouldn't be an issue in Intrepid, although it doesn't use displayconfig but rather a new tool.
