Bug Description

About half of the time the display freezes on boot. It is just before playing the welcome sound. It can also happen that it boots and then there is a popping noise in speakers which does not stop.

My analysis of syslog shows in case of freeze:

Note that in second case we have this IRQ timing error with sound card.

It seems this problem is related to graphics card HD4550 which outputs sound over HDMI. I am using open source drivers only.

In previous versions of ubuntu I had all kind of other problems with this card.

In 10.04 I had no sound at all.
With Windows 7 on same machine everything works perfectly.

I know there are always hints on configuring the model in alsa-conf but as my system is alpha-3 it would be good if somebody could tackle the real problem.

Hi WalterHangartner,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
