ERE, thank you for reporting this bug and making Ubuntu better. I tried opening the file in Microsoft Word Viewer 2003 ( http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=3657ce88-7cfa-457a-9aec-f4f827f20cac&displaylang=en ) via WINE but got "Word Viewer experienced an error trying to open the file.", as well as opening this in Ubuntu 10.10 OOo (just hangs OOo). Could you please attach a screenshot of what it should look like in native Microsoft Word? As well, what version of Word was this document created in?

This problem seems to be a corrupted file issue as when one tries to open in Ubuntu 11.04, LibreOffice Calc via the Terminal:

cd ~/Desktop && wget https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/614018/+attachment/1478246/+files/f116135184.doc && lowriter -nologo f116135184.doc

it just hangs there without loading (let it go for couple hours in a VM, did not budge).
