Official kernel 2.6.32-24 randomly crashes on MBP 2,2 but PPA kernel 2.6.35 works perfectly

Bug Description

When I run the official Lucid Kernel, my MacBook Pro 2,2 randomly reboots. The laptop freeze for 1 or 2 seconds (numlock does not respond) and it reboots. This occurs from 1 to 10 times a day. I does not seems to be related to temperature as I ran 2 cpuburns during 1h30 without problems (CPU cores temp @89C while normal temp is @52C).

At first I taught it was related to heat and I manually forced all the fans at maximum speed with no improvement. I did the EFI firmware upgrade using Mac OSX 10.6 but that didn't help.

I then tried to install applesmc update from mactel-support PPA but it didn't improved anything. I also tried to not load the wifi module (ath9k) but that didn't help either.

The only thing that worked was to use the kernel 2.6.35-12 from Ubuntu Kernel PPA.

I would appreciate to have some hints on how to debug this (maybe steps to to use git bisect ?).

Thanks in advance

Hi Simon,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

As I stated in the initial bug report it is the upstream kernel (2.6.35-12) from the Kernel Team PPA that fixes my issue.

The problem is reproducible with the kernel linux-image-2.6.33-02063301-generic_2.6.33-02063301_amd64.deb from the kernel-ppa.
