Bug Description

I recently re-installed Lucid on my Studio XPS 16, and I've been unable to get sound working. When I first got this laptop (shortly after Lucid's release), I was able to fix this problem by running 'alsamixer' and turning up the volume. But now, everything in 'alsamixer' appears to be set correctly.

I've tried this tip (http://www.jasintha.org/2010/04/dell-studio-xps-16-no-sound-in-ubuntu.html) with no success (add 'options snd-hda-intel model = dell-m6' to the end of '/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf').

In Windows 7, my headphones are working, but not my speakers. So it's possible that speaker volume is working fine in Ubuntu, but that there's something wrong with the hardware. There's nothing wrong with the headphone hardware, though.

Let me know if there's any more information I can provide, and I will be happy to provide it.

I was able to fix this by adding "options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m6 enable_msi=1" to the end of "/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf", as per http://www.linlap.com/wiki/dell+studio+xps+16. Just "options snd-hda-intel model = dell-m6" doesn't work.

There's still no sound from speakers, but since I have the same problem in Windows, I suspect this is a hardware problem.

Hi Matthew,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
