Bug Description

I installed the system with the options 'i915.modeset=0 xforcevesa'.
I only can run LVDS-1 with vesa and i915.modeset=0.
When an external screen is connected on VGA-1, you can only see the desktop on VGA-1. On LVDS-1 is only the backlight working and it looks like a 'blank screen'.

xrandr throws out:

Hi Sascha,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
today I tested the Mainline Kernel 'v2.6.32.18-lucid' without success.
It looks like the same.

It also happen when I boot with the option 'i915.modeset=0 single' into the root console and reload the module i915 with modeset=1.

Is there anything else I can do ?

Sascha

The freedesktop bug id 29647 linked above has been marked as a duplicate of bug 31596. In that thread (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31596) a patch has been posted (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=41123). I recompiled ubuntu kernel 2.6.35-24-generic on a 64 bit machine with that patch applied, and it did fix the problem. I am writing this post from my U160, running kubuntu 10.10 with the patched kernel.

Regards,
