It still isn't working as of today using version 2.6.35-19 of the kernel. Anything I can do to help getting this fixed? It used to work with Lucid.

More information on this:
- latest mainline kernel (2.6.36-999.201009080908) does not work either
- latest Lucid kernel (2.6.32-24.41) works
- when it does not work, the headphone slider in alsamixer is all grayed out

So, this is a VIA codec and I know that their auto-muting confuses pulseaudio, but I'm not sure what the best way to fix it would be. But I'm not sure you're having the same problem as I do.

There is a switch called "Independent HP" in alsamixer. Could you try enabling it, then raising the relevant volumes - does that help?

Aurélien Gâteau (agateau) wrote :

I just tried it:
- With "Independent HP" Off, plugging the headphone mutes the "Front" slider, so nothing can be heard
- With "Independent HP" On, plugging the headphone does not mute anything, so the sound goes through the speakers and not the headphone. Interesting to note that with "Independent HP" On the headphone slider is no longer grayed out, so I can adjust it but it does not change anything.

Hmm. I've tried just commenting out the kernel setting the control values, it seems to solve it for me. Can you try if it works for you as well? Download and install http://people.canonical.com/~diwic/temp/alsa-intel-hda-diwic-via-automute-dkms_1.0.23.diwic_all.deb , then reboot and see if it works.

I am not sure how to verify whether I am running your module though: at the end of the installation there was a message telling it wasn't able to build a module for the running kernel, but there are snd-hda-* modules in /lib/modules/2.6.35-20-generic/updates/dkms/. I tried to rmmod snd-hda-intel to manually insmod the one from the dkms dir but rmmod kept saying me the module was in use, even after stopping quite a lot of processes.

Hmm, what's the output of "modinfo snd-hda-codec-via"?

(I didn't know about modinfo, nice!)
I get this:

filename: /lib/modules/2.6.35-20-generic/updates/dkms/snd-hda-codec-via.ko
description: VIA HD-audio codec
license: GPL
alias: snd-hda-codec-id:1106*
srcversion: FEC723AF1CCA00F55012992
depends: snd-hda-codec,snd
vermagic: 2.6.35-20-generic SMP mod_unload modversions

So it loaded your module.

@Tran Chi Thanh, a major rewrite of the via codec driver is in progress upstream. You are encouraged to try it instead: http://people.canonical.com/~diwic/temp/alsa-hda-dkms-viacleanup_0.1_all.deb
...and report success or failure together with an alsa-info.

I installed this on my Asus K70-IJ running Ubuntu 11.04, nothing much changed really, jack sense still not functioning as it should. IN alsamixer, the Headphone slider is finally available but doesnt do anything. A new option called "Dynamic Power-Control" has appeared, which seems to kill the headphone-out when enabled. Muting Front mutes the laptop speakers, changing its volume changes the headphone volume as well.
