I've backported gnome-commander 1.2 to Ubuntu 5.10 (Breezy) and put this package into Baltix GNU/Linux repository - look at
ftp://ftp.akl.lt/Linux/Baltix/Baltix-Ubuntu_packages/gnome-commander/

This package should work on Ubuntu 6.06 too.
