Hewlett-Packard HP 625: no speaker sound in Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) fresh install

I report this bug just for information, cause it took me several hours to find out the solution.

Package: alsa-base 1.0.22.1+dfsg-0ubuntu3

--- Problem ---

After installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on HP 625 Notebook, you won't get sound through the internal notebook speaker. Line-out works perfectly.

The ALSA Information Script reports the wrong hardware:
HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB
IDT ID 7667

That's because of the wrong alsa driver version, missing the newest drivers:
Driver version: 1.0.21

--- Solution ---

You need alsa driver version 1.0.23 or higher. To install at least driver version 1.0.23 at this time, take the following steps:
* Activate the "Recommended updates (lucid-updates)" and "Pre-released updates (lucid-proposed)" repositories in Synaptic Package Manager (Settings -> Repositories -> Updates).
* Reload your package information.
* Install the package "linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic". This will also install a new linux kernel version.
* Restart and your sound should work properly.
* If not, raise all available volume levels in alsamixer (start alsamixer in terminal).

Now the ALSA Information Script reports the right hardware:
HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB
IDT 92HD88B1

To insure that the latest driver code still works for you, could you please install the package linux-alsa-driver-modules-generic from the Ubuntu Audio Dev PpA, https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-audio-dev/+archive. Please remove any backports alsa packages before you install the package from the PPA.

Please report back as to whether things still work for you as they do with the newer backported alsa packages.

The newest alsa driver snapshot does not work properly. Speakers and line-out work, but the output volume is very very low, so you won't hear much. All alsamixer channels are raised to max.

Built-in Microphone doesn't still work for me, only the speakers work with the dev ppa package....

I had the same problem with Same Ubuntu version with HP-Mini 110 -3000 Netbook.
The ALSA driver was also the same and misreported the hardware as well

After updating the repositories, and ALSA and the Kernel, my system finally has sound after a reboot.

Unfortuneately, I spent hours looking for this very fix, and tweaking the wrong things - so easy in the end

I had the same problem - internal speakers and internal mic didn't work. Yelavich's solution did work for me - however, the sound is very low and the mic is not very strong either. Plus, in Skype it produces bad feedback.

In a nutshell: Sound volume and recording volume are too low.

I got the same Problem, Akaname solution works for me, but with the new Kernel I lose my wireless LAN.

On my HP 625 I don't have problems with wireless lan. Which kernel version do you have? At the moment I'm running version 2.6.32-25.43. If you have problems with version 2.6.32-25.44 or higher, you should downgrade and/or file a new bug report.

I can confirm this bug. I too have an HP laptop with Lucid. Speakers dont work but headphones do. Upgrading to alsa 1.0.23 solves the issue. When Ubuntu has a kernel update it goes back to the old 1.0.21 alsa driver and the problem comes back. It must be an issue with the 1.0.21 alsa driver.
