ALSA re-verb (severe audio distortion) when playing Pidgin alerts

Getting very glitchy sound with Pidgin alerts. The alert will sound off but then what I would describe as severe distortion or reverberation also. This is within Maverick Meerkat.

It is true of all sounds. Even You Tube video playback can result in severe reverb/distortion.

The severe buzzing will start with a Pidgin alert & not stop till next sound, VERY annoying.
