Bug Description

Recently I have upgraded from Ubuntu 9 to 10.04

After upgrading , I am facing a lot of problems.

I am unable to use the system

After booting, during the initial login screen, I am able to see mouse cursor and use mouse for navigating.

But once login is over, the mouse cursor disappears and I can not use mouse.

If I type the command sudo lshw -c display in the terminal, then I can able to use mouse.

This is the command out put when i use the above mentioned command.

root@natarajan-desktop:/home/natarajan# lshw -c display
  *-display UNCLAIMED
       description: VGA compatible controller
product: 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device
       vendor: Intel Corporation
       physical id: 2
       bus info: pci@0000:00:02.0
       version: 03
       width: 32 bits
       clock: 33MHz
       capabilities: pm bus_master cap_list
       configuration: latency=0
       resources: memory:e0000000-e7ffffff(prefetchable) memory:ea000000-ea07fff

The pity is after some time, the system behaves erratically.

The display is garbled. I can see only lines and flashes and flickers in the screen.

and I am unable to use the key board also.

Then I have to restart or shutdown the system.

Ubuntu is free. I accept it.

But it it is not able to work correctly , then why are you releasing it?

I am using Ubuntu starting from the version 8 , and 9. So far no issues.

So Ubuntu 9 is able to work well in my hardware . If Ubuntu 10 will not work in my hardware, I should be warned or prevented from upgrading.

Now I am unable to use the system. Either I have to format or go for another OS.

And I am not able to get help from where I have to report , what are the temporary work arounds, whether this bug will be solved or not.

It will the confidence over the open source Operating system.

Can u guide me what to do next?

Thanks

R.Natarajan

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes Wikipage outlining problems with ubuntu lucid and intel chipset. A simple workaround that will work is to hookup a video card ( lets say nvidia) .
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Maverick Meerkat. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/. Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

As suggested by kurt belgrave , I have tried to change the kernel ( edited in the menu.lst in grub) and went to lower version.

Now there is no mouse cursor issue.

Thanks to kurt belgrave for his multiple suggestions. With this simple work around , I am able to work in the system.

Still I have one doubt.

Now during booting, after the grub kernel selection, the initial screen shows some error messages but after that it boots normally and I am able to login, use the cursor, do the necessary things in the computer.

Is it normal or I have to do any other modifications?

I have captured the necessary error reporting files and sent to the bug tracking system for your reference.
For this I have created one new bug.
Bug #605541

Hi, I had the same issue. My latop is a dell that came with ubuntu 9.04. I tried to upgrade to 9.10 and i get devices errors, and after upgrade to 10.4 i could not use the sistem at all, because the keyword and mouse was totally disabled, so I can't loggin.

I restore to the factory version and is working well. I hope this can be solve soon to get my system up to date.

I just had the same output of Natarajan during booting:

mount: mounting none on /dev failed
chroot: can not execute /etc/apparmor/initramfs: no such file or directory.

Then the login box appear but i can't do anything.

As per kurt belgrave's suggestion

Today I have downloaded Ubuntu desktop 10.10 (maverick) , and booted the system through LIVE CD option.

Now there is no mouse problem, Monitor is visible in the preferences-monitor section,

I am able to change the resolution from the default 800X600 to 1024X768

System seems to be stable, as there is no crash so far.

For your reference, I have captured the problem reporting data and sending with the new bug report
(Bug #607344 ).

Can u suggest, what I can do next?

Thanks

During live cd booting , I have seen the error message Crash detected and reported the same through the Bug #607363

But I am able to work normally in the system with mouse.

You can find below the display details and kernel details.

I have tested with only live cd only.

Already I am facing issues because of upgrading from 9 to 10.4

(There were no issues while I used the version 9)

So I am not sure what will be the issues if I upgrade from 10.4 to 10.10 through the update manager.

Thanks
