Hi tmokeefe and thanks for reporting this bug! Could you try the following: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules and report back if it solves your problem or not?

I followed the instructions from the URL, rebooted the machine and unfortunately this did not fix the issue.

The behavior remains that when I plug in a pair of headphones, sound only comes out through the built-in speakers and no sound comes out through the headphones.

As a coincidence, I believe this has been fixed today. Could you try installing http://people.canonical.com/~diwic/temp/alsa-intel-hda-optiplex-dkms_1.0.23_all.deb (first uninstall the drivers you installed yesterday), reboot, and see if it helps?

Sound is now coming out through the headphones, however the internal speakers are not disabled when headphones are plugged in. Promising :)

No, since it is coded as a line-out and not a headphone-out, instead you have separate volumes for speaker and line-out.

Should I file a different bug since the internal speakers are not disabled when headphones are plugged in? Are you suggesting that is a feature?

Not sure what to do at this point or perhaps I misunderstood your last message.

Patch by David Henningson works for me.

You need to set Sound preferences -> Output -> Connector to Analog Headphones, and then speakers are disabled.

Yes it's a little manual, but better than nothing. Thanks for the patch.

I consider this bug partially fixed. When you plug headphones into any other device on earth, sound does not come out of both the headphones and the built-in speakers. The built-in speakers are usually disabled and re-enabled when headphones are removed.

hi there,
on debian squeeze(testing) same issue here.
sysinfos: asus k42jv, 2.6.32 amd64 kernel, 1.0.23 alsa., codec ALC259

i found out that you have to make following changes with hda analyzer
to mute notebook speakers and get headphone sound:
 - Node[0x14] PIN -> Val[0] + Val[1] -> mute
 - Node[0x1a] PIN -> Connection List -> Audio Mixer [0x0c]

0x14 is the speakers trigger and 0x1a
for headphones.

is there a way to apply these changes script based on system boot?

I tried update alsa from src but It isnt help ( in earlier ubuntu version it was help with my earlier laptop)
I tried some workaround from ubuntu and other forums but no fix this issues.
I tried all of modify on /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf from others forums.
I tried resintall kernel, and reinstall alsa driver module.
I removed pulseaudio.

philbert (2010-09-01, comment #20) appears to offer a solution (tested on EL5/EL6 Redhat/Centos/SL):

First, download and run the HDA Analyser from http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/HDA_Analyzer. For example;
wget -O run.py http://www.alsa-project.org/hda-analyzer.py
su root
python run.py (this will download and save the necessary files, including hda_analyser.py, to /tmp/hda_analyser/)
