Strange i have yesterday the same error with an French user that i know. but him he was having an old version of openshot. Is it a new installation or an old (update) ? You are on wich system ?
Have you check all your dependencies ? (like here : http://openshotusers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=372)
The file/folder ".recently-used.xbel folder" is not existed (in the projet) just only .openshot exist. Check if he is existed and give us more informations, it is very strange.
Do that to :
-whereis python

Thanks.

I think that you have a bad link somewhere.
And it is in your python installation. Are you on Debian ? there is a thread (resolved) on the forum.: http://openshotusers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=472&start=0&hilit=debian
I think that you could run another version of your system (thanks to python) if all the dependencies are installed. You have severals solutions, etiher you keep the official version or either you take the last version (with the blender genrator )
See for having more explanations : http://openshotusers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=476 and try it.
In all cases you extract this folder in your home like you want . you go in and you go yet in. Here you open a terminal (you have all the folders (themes, transitions, effects, windows,....) and you type :
python openshot.py.
Normally; openshot will open. If no put the output of the terminal.

System is updated. Openshot is installed fresh from rep via synaptic manager. All dependencies is ok.
Of the options offered were left alone.
Now it works. The problem arises when installed in a new Gimp 2.7.x
Remove latest testing Gimp and this Repository (ppa.launchpad.net/matthaeus123/mrw-gimp-svn/), rewrite Openshot and libcairo2 package (sudo dpkg-i libcairo2) on older (from 1.9.6 to 1.8.10) and was activated.
I'm s0rry for my bad English.
