This error occurred when applying automatically-determined pending updates in Ubuntu 10.
Sorry, I wasn't watching in detail when it happened.
The Ubuntu 10 automatic updates have not been a happy experience. The longer I have it, the more problems seem to occur. For a long-term support release, this is disappointing.

This installation is such a mess that soon I'll have to reformat and start again.
I don't know if the .ISO install package gets updated over time. I hope it does - it would be disappointing to think that I'm just going to re-un the same sequence of errors in updating since the original install.
