Bug Description

Binary package hint: thunderbird

On a freshly installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx and just installed Thunderbird i'm getting random black frames or window elements. Usually related to mouse movements, window/frame scaling and element interaction (mouse over etc). The element affected gets black and may either return to normal after interaction, start show some of its contents when you place mouse over them and similar.

When launched in terminal no errors appears.

Screenshots are also hard to get, because the black parts change when doing this.

NO COMPIZ or other advanced desktop effect are enabled.

I can confirm this. I'm using a different theme ("walnut") and these areas get white, not black. But the problem is the same.

Do you maybe use the ATI proprietary driver? If yes, which version?

Yup. After changing the theme, those areas are now gray for me.
Btw, while Thunderbird is running other applications (probably GTK based - firefox, gcalctool, screenshot tool and even desktop) start to exhibit this same behavior.

Currently im using ATI proprietary driver, direct install with: "ati-driver-installer-10-6-x86.x86_64.run". Don't remember if i've tried running Thunderbird without any acceleration but i suspect that the problem was present already with Canonical provided ATI drivers.

ive got the same problem with lucid and the 10.7 Catalyst ATI drivers. moving or clicking on the window area draws them properly, but then the black areas return

I've been plagued by this recently also. Only since the newest version of thunderbird (3.0.6) a couple weeks ago. Also using ATI proprietary fglrx driver. I am using full acceleration, and notice no problems anywhere else to my knowledge. I can't decide if it is an actual video 2d bug, video 3d bug, thunderbird only, or gnome theme bug.

I had those in 12.10 and it still lingers in 13.04 beta with 17.0.4 Thunderbird.
