Bug Description
Binary package hint: xserver-
lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Release: 10.04
This is actually Kubuntu.
Using the default Nouveau driver in Lucid, I used the KDE Advanced/Special Applications Settings dialogue in Konsole (right click if you're right-handed over the Menu icon in the top left corner) to set the default Size (Apply Initially) to 590,688 pixels on my 1680x1050 pixel display. This gave me a character size in Konsole of 80 wide by 40 high.
After installing "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current) [Recommended]", the same setting gave a Konsole height of 43 rows. To revert to 40 rows, I had to set 590,644 pixels in KDE.
Of course, this doesn't necessarily point to a bug in Nouveau. Maybe there's a bug in the proprietary driver, or maybe in both. They are inconsistent with each other, though.

This is because the X server forces a DPI of 96, regardless of the physical dimensions of the screen. The nvidia driver doesn't use that bit of X infrastructure, so reports a different DPI. Which is what you're seeing.
Marking as a duplicate.
