Bug Description

I have a figure that does not export to EPS:

gjc@dark-tower:wmrp-termob-paper-elsevier$ svg2eps NewRoad2.svg
Converting NewRoad2.svg to NewRoad2.eps...
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'Inkscape::Extension::Output::save_failed'

Emergency save activated!
Emergency save completed. Inkscape will close now.
If you can reproduce this crash, please file a bug at www.inkscape.org
with a detailed description of the steps leading to the crash, so we can fix it.
** Message: Error: Inkscape encountered an internal error and will close now.

/home/gjc/bin/svg2eps: line 14: 10154 Aborted (core dumped) inkscape --export-text-to-path --without-gui --file=$INPUT --export-eps=$OUTPUT

It only exports to PDF. Unfortunately, even the generated PDF file does not convert to PS:

gjc@dark-tower:wmrp-termob-paper-elsevier$ pdf2ps NewRoad2.pdf

reproduced with Inkscape 0.47 r22583 and 0.47+devel r9602 on OS X 10.5.8

Using the GUI to save a copy as EPS (tested with default export options and with 'Convert texts to paths'), Inkscape does not crash, but fails to export to EPS with the message the file could not be saved. There are no console messages that would hint at the cause of the failure.

may be related to the size, the document size is reported as 13023 px by 9612 px.
I have had some success in exporting it by manually shrinking the entire image by 10 or so. However, the shrinking is complicated by the fact that most of the drawing is done on Layer 1, but some of the drawing has been done on the 'root' layer.

I had tested
- a simple drawing of similar dimensions (3.7 x 2.7 m) which exported to EPS just fine.
- a reduced variant of 'clone of clone of clone' - which also exported to EPS without error.
- the connectors used for the dotted lines, some with broken links, connecting (nested transformed) groups and clones as well show the known erratic behavior when moving some parts or when copying the contents into a new drawing. Current bzr builds crash when grouping the drawing contents or moving them from <root> into "Layer 1" (works in 0.47 though).

I've confirmed the crash if you:
- load the file NewRoad2.svg
- perform Edit->Select All in All Layers
- perform Object->Group

Sorry for being lazy like this, but has this been reported as a separate bug? Would you like me to file a report?

At the moment I would propose to continue the discussion here because it is not clear what causes the EPS export to fail - could be related to connectors or clones or transforms or a combination of all inside nested transformed groups (I don't know).

sounds good, I tried to cause a crash by drawing one object in Layer 1 and then forcibly moving another object from Layer 1 into 'root' and then grouping them, but it did not crash (sigh).

It says the file could not be saved. No crash, though.

Hi - thanks for reporting this bug, I've manually migrated it to Inkscape's new
bug tracker on GitLab, and closed it here.

The failing export has been migrated to https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inbox/-/issues/6487.
The crash on Group is not replicated anymore, but elements get displaced. This has been narrowed down to https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inbox/-/issues/6488.

Please feel free to file new bugs about the issues you're seeing at
http://inkscape.org/report.
