Just as an off-chace, you have not run chromium from terminal with 'sudo chromium-browser' ? I'm not familiar with profile problems in chromium, but that is one certain way to break Firefox.

never do it ! (If you ever need to use sudo for a programme, always use gksudo (kdesudo for kubuntu) else it will royally mess up your profile). It appears from reading the link below, that it is a corruption in the profile that is causing your problem I'd suggest heading over there and trying what they say. http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=27756 There is a work-around there that should get you up and running.

If you can try what is suggested there and post back here how you get on.

I'm not sure how to further action this bug, as the bug is known to the chromium team.

Same just happened to me:
$ apt-cache policy chromium-browser
chromium-browser:
  Installed: 10.0.648.133~r77742-0ubuntu0.10.10.1
  Candidate: 10.0.648.133~r77742-0ubuntu0.10.10.1

Renamed:
/home/<user>/.config/chromium/Default/"Web Data" to "x-Web Data-x" and restarted. Works.
I then attempted to look at in an sqlite browser/editor & it's obvious the the file is corrupted (I can easily read the new "Web Data" in the same editor.

I read an easy fix for this, which worked for me.
In my case, the error was caused because of some chromium-related processes were stuck in the background.
So:

1. Launch: "System / Administration / System monitor"
2. Switch to "Processes" tab
3. Kill every process which has "chromium" in it's name
4. Start Chromium

Hope it works for you too.
