Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

I have this problem on Ubuntu 10.04 - Lucid Lynx. I am using compiz (version 1:0.8.4-0ubuntu15) and have focus set to follow mouse (System=>Preferences=>Windows and tick "Select windows when the mouse moves over them").

To reproduce, bring up the keyboard shortcut editor using "System=>Preferences=>Keyboard Shortcuts". Scroll down to the Window Management section and select "Raise window if it's covered by another window, otherwise lower it". Bind to some unused key like F4. After this I find that pressing F4 has no effect on windows - they are neither raised nor lowered. I would expect them to be lowered if they were already on top, otherwise I would expect them to be raised.

If I bind F4 to just "Raise Window" or "Lower Window" then F4 works fine. If I change window manager (System=>Preferences=>Appearance and select None on the Visual Effects tab) to metacity then the "raise if obscured, otherwise lower" functionality works as expected.

Changing back to compiz (by setting Visual Effects to Normal or Extra) breaks it again.

Thanks for the report, it has been some time without any response or feedback in this bug report and we are wondering if this is still an issue for you with the latest release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal, May you please test with that version and comment back if you're still having or not the issue? Please have a look at http://www.ubuntu.com/download to know how to install that version. Thanks in advance and sorry for the late response.

Sorry but I am not planning on updating to 11.04 anytime soon. I will be sticking with 10.04.2 LTS for the foreseeable future.

FYI this bug affects me.

I just upgraded from ubuntu-9 to ubuntu-11.04. Running the default Unity, this bug manifests itself. Logging in as "ubuntu classic" I get the gnome-desktop and this bug does not occur.

(also FWIW this bug is a showstopper for me as far as adopting Unity goes; I can't work without "raise/lower window"!!)
