Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

Lucid 10.04 with Empathy 2.30.1.1 and indicator-applet 0.3.7. When using the default indicator-applet on the status bar, I get no notifications for incoming chats or comments to existing chats. By removing the indicator-applet from the bar, Empathy seems to default back to using its own status icon and notifications work fine. This happens 100% of the time for me and I can easily switch back and forth between the two situations to replicate the issue. I have tested this with the help of other accounts on both gmail chat and facebook chat.

Thanks for your bug report and helping to make Ubuntu better. Are you getting the green notification color from the indicator applet when someone leaves you an IM?

Yes, the icon turns green, but since I prefer to have the bar hide away I never see it. Also, the icon stays green most of the time since I stay logged in to an irc server most of the day.

By the way, I do get one notification from irc. When Empathy first starts and logs in, I'll get a notification from nickserv about my nick registration. That's the only notification I get -- no more from irc from that point and never any for chat accounts.

Mark, what happens with the indicator applet upon getting your first IM. Could you please describe a step-by-step as to what happens. THanks

Sure. To fully understand the problem I'll take you from login to chat. I've set my bar to not hide itself so I can see exactly what happens.

1. Login. Mail icon on indicator-applet is white.

2. 15 seconds or so later, the envelope turns green and I get a notification bubble from nickserv about my freenode nick being registered. Notification fades away and leaves envelope green. I ignore this because empathy handles the password registration with nickserv automatically.

3. Friend sends IM through jabber (gmail). Nothing happens. Icon is already green from the nickserv exchange. There's no change in the icon and no notification. Nothing.

4. Just to check, I click the mail icon and sure enough, I've got two "chats" in progress, one from nickserv on freenode and another from my friend. I select my friend's chat from the menu and can exchange messages.

5. With the chat window open but not focused, my friend sends another message. I get a notification.

6. I close the chat window, ending the chat. My friend sends another message after I close the window and I get no notification. I click on the envelope and there's the chat on the list, 0 minutes old.

7. I select and close both the jabber chat and the freenode nickserv. The icon turns white.

8. Friend sends another message through gmail. Envelope turns green and I get a notification. Friend sends subsequent messages and notifications work.

9. Without ending the jabber chat, I enlist a second friend who sends a message through facebook. No notification. But the chat is on the envelope menu.

10. I end the jabber chat and have the facebook chat resent, I get a notification.

So the issue seems to be notifications with more than one unread chat open at once. I was assuming that all notifications failed after the initial one but that's only because I was ignoring the nickserv chat and leaving it unread. It seems that any second unread chat doesn't notify. This exercise helped me clarifiy the issue for myself. I hope I've typed it clearly here.

For reference, my notification settings are 'enable bubble notifications' and 'enable notifications when the chat is not focused' and 'show incoming messages in the menu'

I don't experience this issue, and since this bug is expired, I'll close it. Thank you for your understanding!
