I have had to live with this bug for months!

Former messages to ubuntu french forum:

It looks like if some graphic widgets (this morning Gmail pop-ups in Firefox) would bring the system to this freezed state...
alas I can't identify which kind of technology they are made of
No trace at all apparently in system logs...

Does this issue, which appears randomly sooner or later during my sessions, ring a bell to somebody?

Today it freezed twice under a Thunderbird activity (reading html texts)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in xserver-xorg.
For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of applications have bug reporting functionality built in to them. This can be accessed via the Report a Problem option in the Help menu for the application with which you are having an issue. You can learn more about this feature at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Also, can you test this with Maverick, to see if the issue is still present?

Thank you for your care.

I'm still with Karmic and... random freezing!
I looked to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze

I installed openssh
After system freezed I succeed to login as root
I went to /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0 but all files remained empty in this repertory...

I only could execute dmesg
