Bug Description

Hi, for what I hope is a comprehensive history of the error please see the thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1514491

Unfortunately the guideline options 1-4 below won't provide accurate information as I am using 9.10 Ubuntu now. Rather I hope the following provides more information.

1) Recently attempted to install Xubuntu 10.04 on a old computer system with the folowing graphics card: nVidia Corporation C51 [GeForce 6150 LE] (rev a2).
2) Running DVD as Live CD failed, after selecting try without changes option, screen blacks out and monitor switches off. Advised to try Alternative Xubuntu 10.04 cd.
3) Ran installation of Xubuntu 10.04 Alternate CD. Post installation failed to show grub menu, tried Esc but no options present at all.
4) Install Backtrack 4 as dual boot (based on 8.10 ubuntu platform) installation works fine for BT4 and grub menu now present. However loading of Xubuntu 10.04 from grub menu still fails - screens blacks out and monitor switches off.
5) Formatted system using G-Parted.
6) Tested Ubuntu 10.04 live cd. Can finally after very long delay get a live cd X session. Using F6 options; Selected noapic, nolapic, edd=on, nodmraid, nomodeset.
7) From Ubuntu 10.04 lives session installed system to HDD. After reboot failed to show grub menu, tried Esc but no options present at all.
8) Installed dual boot with Backtrack 4. Grub menu present as per "4" still unable to log into system or get tty1 expect now working with Ubuntu 10.04.
9) Advised thanks to Ubuntu Forum, open-source driver had changed in version 10.04 from Vesa (9.10) to Nouveau. Advised to try 9.10 Ubuntu.
10) Tested Ubuntu 9.10 live cd. System boots correctly from live cd with no issues. Performed installation. Rebooted and using tty1 installed NVIDIA driver "NVIDIA-Linux-x86-195.36.31-pkg1.run" from www.nvidia.com.
11) Installed dual boot Backtrack 4. Grub menu now present (not there after 9.10 installation until BT4 dual boot installation).
11) System full operational until upgrade of kernel to: 2.6.31-22-generic. Fstab mount errors, unable to load X session.
12) Booted in with live-cd changed fstab from read-only. Re-installed NVIDIA driver.
13) Ubuntu 9.10 now fully operational with no further errors.

Summary. Errors do seem to be a result of the Nouveau driver in 10.04.
Hope this helps provide some info.

Thanks Kamus that section seems to house other similar bugs that I've seen in the *buntu forums so I'm glad to see it there.

I've got the same graphics card and I'm experiencing exactly the same problem with the nouveau driver under 10.04

When I boot the ubuntu-desktop ISO I get a 'messed' up version of the desktop of a previous boot of karmic. The system locks up and the only way out is through Alt-SysRq.

Even just booting to the terminal with the 'single' option to grub I get:

nouveau 0000:00:05.0 GPU Lockup - switching to software fbcon

I managed to get 10.04 'working' by installing it from the mini.iso, blacklisting vga16fb and nouveau and installing nvidia-current.

Don't know if it could be related but mine has a problem with S3 - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/390158

Hi Charlie and thanks for the message. Unfortunately I'm unable to do that as the system has been replaced for a model that works with 10.04. This bug relates to very specific hardware yet from the forums it's become apparent over time that there may be a general issue with the nouveau driver and nvidia cards. I know you guys are busy and considering the very specific nature of the hardware and bug I'm happy for this to hit the expiration date if Indie is also. Thanks for the help and contributions all the same.
