Bug Description

Binary package hint: apt

Greetings!

Upgrading 9.10->10.04 on 5 IBM blade servers resulted in numerous dependency bugs with lots of reboots required,
freezes, and requests (from apt) to

dpkg --configure -a
run it with the --fix-missing option.

In total took me about 2 days (imagine a happy owner of 1000 blades). Although the clean installation now seems error-free, I had lots of packages and config files I wanted to preserve rather that reinstall/reconfigure

I am attaching 5 contents of /var/log/dist-upgrade created with tar cvzf b0* /var/log/dist-upgrade.

Sergei

Please disregard the last part of my post pertainng to amd64, since I am reporting a bug from a laptop remotely connected to the blade servers. Besides, filing a bug allows for just one attachment. I add the other 4 by adding comments

Forgot to mention:

1. my servers automatically update very often (in /etc/crontab), so my 9.10 was not rusty before I started the upgrade to 10.04
2. during the upgrade there were also numerous reports "only partial update will/can be made" forcing me to recontinue after it's
    been done

Maybe this is unrelated, but nevertheless:

when I tried to Computer Janitor, on each blade it took several (3-5) iterations before all obsolete/uneeded packages were wiped out, i.e., the janitor cannot resolve dependencies in just one go. However, dependencies are represented as a DAG so one iteration should always suffice.

Basically, it's the same behavior as shown by the upgrade.

Looks like the crux is in the dependency DAG handling during the upgrade.

This is my 50 cent guess. Any objections?
