Bug Description

I am using Kubuntu 10.04 on an IBM Thinkpad T20. Upon selecting K->Leave->Shutdown, the system runs through all expected shutdown procedures except at the end I see a "Checking battery status" message (probably irrelevant). The screen blanks out but with a flashing cursor in the upper left. At this point there is no hard drive activity noted, but power remains on and the fan is on. I can either press the power button for 5 - 7 seconds for a poweroff shutdown or press the "alt/sysrq/reisuo" sequence which displays a series of responses followed by powering off.

I have tried, while still in KDE, to open a konsole and entering sudo /sbin/shutdown -P now, which results in a reboot cycle. I have tried, while still in KDE, to enter "ctrl/alt/del", which results in a reboot cycle. I have tried removing the "acpi=force" parameter from /etc/default/grub, which gives all the same results except for the final displayed messages, before requiring the same manual interventions.

I upgraded from Kubuntu 9.10, which displayed none of these behaviors, to Kubuntu 10.04 and have applied all requested patches and updates since then. Current kernel:

john@john-laptop:/etc/default$ uname -a
Linux john-laptop 2.6.32-22-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 3 22:02:19 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

Kubuntu release:

john@john-laptop:/etc/default$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Release: 10.04
Codename: lucid

This does not prevent me from operating with my laptop, but it is wrong.

This bug was assigned to coinor-osi by mistake. kdebase seems to be a more appropriate package for it.

An update, and a step backwards.

I recently had to reinstall Kubuntu Lucid, which I did from a Shipit CD. I now have a later kernel and an updated version of Lucid.

john@john-laptop:/usr/bin$ uname -a
Linux john-laptop 2.6.32-24-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP Thu Aug 19 01:12:52 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
john@john-laptop:/usr/bin$ sudo lsb_release -a
[sudo] password for john:
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
Release: 10.04
Codename: lucid
john@john-laptop:/usr/bin$

KDE version: 4.4.2

In testing various shutdown processes, with the intent of ending with a powered off state, all mechanisms brought my machine to a "halt" with the only option being to press the power switch, and alt/sysrq/REISUO now not working.

From KDE desktop:
K->Leave->Shutdown
or
right click->Leave->Logout plus ctl/alt/del

From a konsole:
sudo shutdown -h now ("halt" as expected)
or
sudo shutdown -P now

Different, but still not acceptable.

Please cancel this bug. When using Kubuntu Lucid Lynx, the system shuts down normally when specifying "ACPI=FORCE" in the boot string. The BIOS in my IBM T20 is just too old.

thnk you.
