Bug Description

Binary package hint: apt

A really useful enhancement to apt-get would be to allow the installation of .deb packages, but with apt's clever abilities.

For example:
    apt-get install ./some_custom_pkg.deb
would install it, provided it isn't already present (similar to dpkg -iE), but with the advantage of doing dependency resolution, and automatically downloading the requirements.

For comparison, Mandriva's urpmi tool does precisely this.

You can use the tool "gdebi" for this for now. It uses libapt as its backend.

There is a patch and a report filled at Debian BTS that have a patch for this implementation (not tested for me, maybe Michael Vogt has more information about it).

This is something that I miss from Fedora which I used for some time. With it you could use "yum install package.rpm" which would do this. Later they moved to dnf which probably works the same way.
